About
The SCIF Facilities Overview course provides a working understanding of the different types of accredited secure facilities, the compartmented areas they can contain, and the construction methods used to build them. This course is designed for individuals who participate in secure facility planning and need to understand the trade-offs that come with each facility category. Students will gain familiarity with the four permanent SCIF categories (Secure Working Area, Open Storage, Closed Storage, and Continuous Operation), the temporary categories (Temporary Secure Working Area and T-SCIF including ground-based, airborne, and shipboard variants), and the three types of Compartmented Areas defined in the IC Tech Spec. The course addresses the rare “SCIF within a SCIF” exception available through ICD 906 when a program manager determines that ICD 705 does not provide adequate safeguarding. It also covers the four common construction methods (conventional, modular, ISO container, and panelized), including delivery timelines (panelized systems can be installed in six to twelve weeks), the cost and flexibility trade-offs, and the practical limitations of each approach. By the end of the course, participants will be better prepared to recognize the right facility type for a given mission, understand how Compartmented Areas reduce cost by sharing a SCIF perimeter, and discuss construction method trade-offs with project teams. Ideal for: • New security professionals • Project managers, owners, and capture teams • Architects, engineers, and designers • Construction managers and superintendents • Anyone supporting SCIF or SAPF planning who needs to understand how secure facilities are categorized and built
